Embroidery 102

We will be exploring quilting in the hoop in this class. The project we will be making, Snappy Sleeves, is perfect for learning to quilt in the hoop.

You will learn to quilt edge to edge and borders right from your embroidery machine adding a fun and practical design element to your projects.

You will need a 6" x 10" minimum embroidery hoop to make the medium size sleeve. If you have a magnetic hoop, either 10" x 10" or 7" x 14" you can make the larger sleeve. If you don't have a magnetic hoop you will need to use mesh stabilizer.

If you are making the medium sleeve, refer to the pattern for your supplies and cutting instructions. Please cut and label all pieces. I don't think you need to use interfacing in this project so you can skip that. Please be sure your Soft and Stable foam is cut 8" longer and 8" wider than your main fabric piece.

If you are making the larger sleeve, please piece your top together so that you have two or three narrow pieces as a border somewhere in your main piece and your finished pieced top is 28" x 16" for the horizontal sleeve or 33" x 13" for the vertical sleeve.

For my sleeve, I used a charm pack. I cut 14 pieces in half (2 1/2" X 5") and sewed them together along the long edge to make two strips with 14 pieces each strip. Cut 3 - 3" pieces for the borders and the strip down the middle. Sew those all together before class.

Additionally, cut the lining pieces out and the Soft and Stable foam. Cut your foam 8" longer and 8" wider than your pieced top. If you don't have a magnetic hoop, you will need to use mesh stabilizer.

We are not going to make a vinyl label pocket as that will take time away from quilting.

You will also need embroidery thread for the top and bottom of your sleeve. Be sure to wind your bobbin thread from the same spool as your top thread.

Have an embroidery needle or quilting needle in your machine, size 75.

You will also need some spray adhesive, as well as basic embroidery and sewing supplies.

We will be completing the sleeves in class so you will need to put your machine in sewing mode.
